Amazon reported its fourth consecutive quarter of earnings on Thursday.

As part of the results of its first fiscal quarter of 2019, Amazon said that its earnings rose to the US $ 3,600 million, an increase of 125 percent compared to the US $ 1,600 million obtained in the same period a year ago. In contrast, Amazon’s revenues grew by only 17 percent to US $ 59.7 billion during the first three months of 2019, compared to the US $ 51 billion in the same period of 2018.

Despite its solid finances, the world’s largest e-commerce company had a difficult start to the year. At the end of 2018, Amazon decided to place its second headquarters in New York City, but in the new year, it suffered strong opposition from local activists to the plan. In February, Amazon turned back and said it would cancel its plans to put its campus there.

In addition, Jeff Bezos, CEO, and founder of Amazon, announced his divorce this year after 25 years of marriage. Known as a discreet person, Bezos’ private life was on the front pages of the media for a scandal related to inappropriate photos that the executive sent to his new girlfriend.

At the moment, none of these issues seems to have affected Amazon’s business significantly. Amazon Web Services (AWS, for its acronym in English), the cloud computing unit, again contributed a large part of the company’s profits. In the first quarter, AWS obtained the US $ 2,200 million in operating profits in the period, 59 percent more than the previous year.
